ABSTRACT

Aims: Ocimum gratissimum is an aromatic and medicinal plant, well known for its medicinal values such as antifungal properties. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of T. diversifolia powder and compost use as biofertilizer on the growth parameters, essential oil (EO), total phenolic and flavonoid content and anticandida activity of O. gratissimum. Study Design: O. gratissimum plants were cultivated for 8 months in an experimental farm designed as a split plot into 4 blocks. Each block was amended (main factor) either with T. diversifolia compost (150 g/plant), powder (40 g/plant) or the synthetic fertilizer NPK (10 g/plant), respectively, followed by sprayed (second factor) with same fertilizer at 20 g/L, 20 g/L and 2 g/L or water every two weeks after transplantation. The control block received no amendment and was sprayed with water or the previous fertilizer. Place and Duration of Study: This work was carried out within August 2019 to October 2020 in Yaoundé-Cameroon. Methodology: Plant growth parameters (fresh and dry leaves weight, florescent weight and plant height) were evaluated at four and eight months after transplantation. The harvested fresh leaves were hydrodistillated for EO and the hot aqueous extract. Both extracts were used for the evaluation of the anticandida activity while the latter was submitted to total flavonoids and phenolic analyses. Results: At 4 and 8 months after transplantation, the synthetic fertilizer and T. diversifolia compost significantly increased plant growth parameters as compared to other treatments. The plants treated with T. diversifolia biofertilizer compost showed the highest total phenolic (53.16 µg GAE/µL), flavonoid (36.32 µg// GAE/µL) content, and EO yield (0.666%). The EO from O. gratissimum treated with T. diversifolia compost showed the best inhibitory activity on C. albicans NR-29451. Conclusion: This study showed that T. diversifolia compost was a promising organic fertilizer in optimizing the growth, secondary metabolites and anticandida activity of O. gratissimum.

ABSTRACT: We search for positive utility impact on the invasive species Pterygoplichthys spp. The optimal level of replacement of sardine meal (SM) by Pterygoplichthys spp. meal (PLM) in practical feeds for fry of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was evaluated. We evaluated six experimental diets: 50% PLM-50% SM, 60% PLM-40% SM, 70% PLM-30% SM, 80% PLM-20% SM, 90% PLM-10% SM and 100% PLM-0% SM. In a recirculation system, 270 sex-reversed tilapia fry were used (0.7 ± 0.1 g). Diets were administered in triplicate and the experiment lasted 56 days with sampling every 14 days. There were no statistical differences in growth. At the end of the experiment, the SGR, ADG, CF, WG, DFI, FCR and PER were determined without significant differences (P > 0.05) between treatments, but there was a tendency that could indicated higher WG and PER in the 90% PLM-10% SM treatment (93.56 ± 0.43% and 8.44 ± 1.18 g, respectively). All survival rates were higher than 90% with no significant differences. Additionally, there were no statistical differences in the chemical composition of the whole fish, while apparent digestibility coefficients of protein (81-90%) and lipids (87-93%) also showed no significant differences. We concluded that 100% PLM can replace 100% SM in feeding fry of O. niloticus without affecting their survival, growth or chemical composition or the apparent digestibility of nutrients.


RESUMO: Buscamos por um impacto positivo de utilidade nas espécies invasoras como Pterygoplichthys spp. Foi avaliado o nível ótimo de substituição da farinha de sardinha (SM) pela farinha de Pterygoplichthys spp. (PML) em dietas práticas para tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus). Foram utilizadas seis dietas experimentais; 50% PLM-50% SM, 60% PLM-40% SM, 70% PLM-30% SM, 80% PLM-20% SM, 90% PLM-10% SM e 100% PLM-0% SM. Em sistema de recirculação foram colocados 270 filhotes de tilápia machos (0.7 ± 0.1 g). As dietas foram triplicadas, o experimento durou 56 dias com amostragem a cada 14 dias, não houve diferença estatística para o crescimento. No final do experimento, foram determinados SGR, ADG, CF, WG, DFI, FCR e PER, não encontrando diferenças significativas (P> 0,05), embora tenha havido uma tendência indicando maior WG e PER na dieta 90% PLM-10% SM (93,56 ± 0,43% e 8,44 ± 1,18 g). A sobrevida foi superior a 90%, sem diferenças significativas. Além disso, não houve diferenças significativas na composição proximal de todo o peixe, enquanto o aparente coeficiente de digestibilidade de proteínas (81-90%) e lipídios (87-93%) também não mostrou diferenças significativas. Podemos concluir que o uso de 100% de farinha de Pterygoplichthys spp. pode substituir 100% de farinha de sardinha na alimentação de jovens O. niloticus sem afetar a sobrevivência, o crescimento, a composição química e a digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes.

Abstract The current agricultural system has led to the development of glyphosate (GP)-resistant weeds, causing an increase in GP doses and applications. Native mycota of pesticide-contaminated sites are the major source of pesticide-degrading microorganisms. The aims of the present study were to isolate the GP-tolerant culturable mycota in two soils with different pesticide exposure from Córdoba, Argentina, and to evaluate the growth parameters in native fungal isolates in the presence of GP and the effective dose that caused 50% growth reduction. The results showed that the genera Fusarium, Aspergillus, Mucor, Penicil-lium and Sterilia were the prevalent fungi isolated from soils both exposed and not-exposed to pesticides. The highest value (>100 mM) of effective concentration of herbicide that caused 50% growth inhibition (EC50), was found for Trichoderma isolates. Sterilia spp. had EC50 val-ues of 100mM, while Aspergillus spp. and Mucor had EC50 values between 50 and 100mM. The growth rate evaluation varied according to the isolates and GP concentrations. The data showed that all Aspergillus spp., Trichoderma spp., Mucor and three Sterilia spp. had the best growth performance in media supplied with GP after a variable acclimation period. This study provides valuable data for further studies that would allow to know the metabolic capacity of these fungal species that can be potential candidates for GP removal from contaminated environments.


Resumen El sistema agrícola actual condujo ai desarrollo de malezas resistentes a glifos-ato (GP), lo que deriva en el aumento de las dosis y el número de aplicaciones requeridas. La microbiota nativa de sitios contaminados con plaguicidas constituye la fuente principal de microorganismos capaces de degradar este herbicida. Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron aislar la microbiota cultivable tolerante a GP a partir de dos suelos agrícolas con diferente grado de exposición a plaguicidas, ambos de la provincia de Córdoba, Argentina, y evaluar en los hongos nativos aislados los parámetros de crecimiento en presencia de GP y la dosis efectiva que produce un 50% de reducción del crecimiento (EC50). Los géneros Fusarium, Aspergillus, Mucor, Penicillium y Sterilia fueron los de mayor prevalencia, tanto en suelos expuestos como no expuestos a plaguicidas. La mayor EC50 hallada (> 100 mM) correspondió a dos aislamientos de Trichoderma. En dos aislamientos de Sterilia, los valores de EC50 fueron de 100 mM, mientras que en los dos de Aspergillus y en uno de Mucor fueron de entre 50 y 100 mM. La velocidad de crecimiento varió según la concentración de GP empleada y el aislamiento considerado. Todos los aislamientos de Aspergillus, Trichoderma y Mucor, y tres aislamientos de Sterilia mostraron el mejor rendimiento en cuanto al crecimiento en los medios con GP después de un período de aclimatación variable. Este trabajo proporciona datos preliminares valiosos referidos a la capacidad metabólica de estos aislados y su potencial para remover GP en ambientes contaminados.

ABSTRACT

The in vitro seed germination which results in the production of disease-free seedlings and greenhouse germination of the seeds of Mansonia altissima was investigated in order to establish a better way of germination of the timber species. Five levels of GA3 treatment were used in in vitro germination with three replicate and two seeds were inoculated in each of the jam bottle. Whereas, in greenhouse germination, five levels of different treatments were used, replicated three times and each Petri plate contained 15 seeds. The experiment was repeated twice and the data from each experiment was put together and used for the statistical analysis. The results showed that seeds germination occurred eight days after inoculation in in vitro but in the case of greenhouse germination, it took only five days. For in vitro rapid germination of Mansonia altissima, the MS medium should be supplemented with 1.0 μm of GA3. Equally, in greenhouse germination, the seeds need to be soaked in 1.0 mM of GA3 for 24 hours. Alternatively, in the absence of GA3, the seeds can be soaked in water for 24 hours before broadcasting the seeds on the seedbed for germination, as this will help to identify nonviable seeds.

ABSTRACT

Background: Advancement of skill, technology and perinatal medicine has led to improve survival of low birth weight babies during the last few decades but they have reported high incidence of growth failure during infancy and early childhood. The objective of the study was to find out the influence of perinatal risk factors on anthropometric outcome.Methods: A prospective cohort study conducted on 143 ELBW and VLBW babies admitted in Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU and PICU) of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMC), Darjeeling, West Bengal from 2016 to 2017 and discharged babies were followed up.Results: Total 143 neonates were studied at NBMC among male 82(57.3%) and female 61(42.7%), 95 were AGA and 48 were SGA babies. Significant positive correlations were found among birth weight, gestational age, perinatal infection (p<0.001). The mean weight for age (Mean'SD) was 7.615'1.1092 kg with median 7.8 kg. The mean length for age (Mean'SD) was 72.6'3.74 cm with median 73 cm. The mean head circumference for age (Mean'SD) was 42.5'2.12 cm median 43 cm. Adverse neonatal outcome associated with CRIB II score ?10. Total CRIB II score with parameters of growth (<-2 Z score) like weight for age, length for age, weight for length and head circumference for age shows significant correlation (p<0.001).Conclusions: Perinatal risk factors are important determinant for future anthropometric outcome in very low and extremely low birth weight babies. They should be identified, and appropriate measures should be taken to achieve good outcome.

Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of two dominant arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi along with Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens on the growth and vase life of Chrysanthemum indicum ('Garden Mum'- Kathleen Dark Red). Methodology: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of G. mosseae (G) and A. laevis (A) along with T. viride (T) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (P) on the growth and vase life of C. indicum L. under polyhouse conditions. The experiment was laid in a randomized block design with five replicates. Results: AM fungi along with other bioinoculants showed maximum root colonization leading to increased water absorption and various important nutrients, especially phosphorous, thereby enhancing the growth and different biochemical attributes. For the vase life experiment, bioinoculants treated plants showed better result with minimum peroxidase activity, thereby delaying flower senescence. Interpretation: AMF inoculation should be recommended at nursery level as biofertilizers are cost effective and also a substitute for chemical fertilizers

This study evaluated the in vitro effect of three concentrations of atrazine, chlorpyrifos and endosulfan on the growth parameters of four non-toxigenic Aspergillus section Flavi strains. The ability of the strains to remove these pesticides in a synthetic medium was also determined. Growth parameters were measured on soil extract solid medium supplied with 5,10 and 20mg/l of each pesticide, and conditioned to -0.70, -2.78, -7.06 and -10.0 water potential (MPa). Removal assays were performed in Czapek Doc medium (CZD) supplied with 20mg/l of each pesticide under optimal environmental conditions (-2.78 of MPa and 25 °C). The residual levels of each pesticide were detected by the reversed-phase HPLC/fluorescence detection system. The lag phases of the strains significantly decreased in the presence of the pesticides with respect to the control media. This result indicates a fast adaptation to the conditions assayed. Similarly, the mycelial growth rates in the different treatments increased depending on pesticide concentrations. Aspergillus oryzae AM 1 and AM 2 strains showed high percentages of atrazine degradation (above 90%), followed by endosulfan (56 and 76%) and chlorpyrifos (50 and 73%) after 30 days of incubation. A significant (p <0.001) correlation (r = 0.974) between removal percentages and growth rate was found. This study shows that non-toxigenic Aspergillus section Flavi strains from agricultural soils are able to effectively grow in the presence of high concentrations of atrazine, chlorpyrifos and endosulfan under a wide range of MPa conditions. Moreover, these strains have the ability to remove high levels of these pesticides in vitro in a short time.


En este estudio se evaluó los efectos in vitro de 3 concentraciones de atrazina, clorpirifós y endosulfán sobre los parámetros de crecimiento de 4 cepas no toxigénicas de Aspergillus sección Flavi. También se evaluó la capacidad de las cepas de remover los pesticidas. Los parámetros de crecimiento se ensayaron en medio agar extracto de suelo suplementado con 5, 10 y 20mg/l de cada pesticida y acondicionado a -0.70, -2.78, -7.06 y -10.0 de potencial de agua (MPa). Los ensayos de remoción se realizaron en medio Czapek Dox con 20mg/l de cada pesticida bajo condiciones óptimas de crecimiento (-2.78 de MPa y 25 °C). Los niveles residuales de atrazina, clorpirifós y endosulfán se detectaron en un sistema HPLC con detección por fluorescencia. La fase de latencia de las cepas disminuyó significantemente en presencia de los pesticidas, indicando una rápida adaptación a dichas condiciones. La velocidad de crecimiento se incrementó considerablemente dependiendo de la concentración de pesticida. Las cepas Aspergillus oryzae AM1 y AM2 mostraron porcentajes elevados de degradación de atrazina (aproximadamente el 90%), seguidos por endosulfán (56 y 76%) y clorpirifós (50 y 73%). Se observó una correlación (r = 0.974) significante (p <0.001) entre el porcentaje de pesticida removido y la velocidad de crecimiento. Este estudio muestra que cepas no-toxigénicas de Aspergillus sección Flavi aisladas de suelos agrícolas desarrollan eficientemente en presencia de altas concentraciones de atrazina, clorpirifós y endosulfán en un amplio rango de MPa. Además, presentan capacidad de remover in vitro altos niveles de pesticidas en corto tiempo.

ABSTRACT

Increased use of microalgae as food additives, biofuels, pharmaceuticals and in waste treatment increases effluent production. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different culture media on growth of Chlorella sorokiniana and the influence of the cultural refuse on seed germination of lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The microalga was grown in different media for 27 days. The maximum specific growth rate (µmax) during mixotrophic growth phase was obtained in the novel medium composed of 50% NPK medium and 50% Bold Basal medium supplemented with glucose (1 g L-1). Cell proliferation in Bold Basal and NPK media presented a very close µmax values, indicating that NPK may be a good option for low-cost microalgal production. The effluents from the microalgal culture failed to induce any marked variation in the germination of lettuce seeds. This clearly shows that the microalgal effluent does not cause any toxicity to germinating lettuce seeds. Thus C. sorokiniana cultivation combined with horticulture can be utilized as a feasible productive integrated system.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To study the effect of different nitrogen fertilizer rates on growth, carbon assimilation and biochemical changes of Polygonum minus. Study Design: Polygonum minus were treated with different nitrogen fertilizer (0 kg N ha-1, 50 kg N ha-1, 100 kg N ha-1 and 150 kg N ha-1) using Urea (46%N) as a source of nitrogen. This experiment was arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Place and Duration of Study: The experiment was conducted at Taman Pertanian Universiti (TPU), Universiti Putra Malaysia between April 2017 to July 2017. Methodology: The growth parameters measured includes the leaf number, plant height, diameter of the stem, and the leaf area. The carbon assimilation parameters were measured using LICOR 6400XT Portable Photosynthesis System. Total phenolic and flavonoids contents from the leaves extracts of Polygonum minus were measured using Folin-Ciocalteu reagents. Results: The best rates of nitrogen in enhancing the best growth and quality of Polygonum minus was observed at 150 kg N ha-1 in most parameters of growth and carbon assimilation. At the final harvest, the parameters such as number of leaves, plant height, stem diameters, total chlorophyll contents, leaves area, total dry weight, net assimilation rate (NAR), water use efficiency (WUE), net photosynthesis rate (A) stomatal conductance (gs), and maximal efficiency of photosystem II (fv/fm) were highest at 150 kg N ha-1treatments. In the terms of biochemical changes, the parameter such as total phenolics contents and total flavonoids gain the highest production of total phenolics and flavonoids at 50 kg N ha-1. Conclusion: This study indicated growth and carbon assimilation parameters were upregulated under higher nitrogen fertilization and production of secondary metabolites was decreased with high rates of nitrogen. The recommended nitrogen fertilization for P. minus was at 50 kg N Ha-1, where it obtained the highest harvest index.

Resumen Cittarium pica es un gasterópodo conspicuo de los litorales rocosos del Caribe. Dada su importancia en la dieta de las comunidades del Caribe, éste ha sido sobrexplotado, incluso en algunos lugares se ha extinguido, por lo cual algunos países lo han incluido dentro de la lista roja de invertebrados marinos. En la isla de San Andrés Colombia la pesca es artesanal y no tiene regulaciones, conllevando a una disminución de su población. Teniendo en cuenta la importancia socioeconómica, cultural y ecológica de C. pica, así como su grado de vulnerabilidad a la extinción, es urgente desarrollar acciones de manejo que incrementen la resiliencia de la especie y el sostenimiento del recurso. Para evaluar el estado de la población de C. pica de la isla, se estimó la estructura por talla y por sexo, talla de maduración, y los parámetros de crecimiento a partir del análisis de datos de frecuencia de tallas. De septiembre a diciembre 2013 y de enero a marzo 2014, se recolectaron al azar 458 ejemplares en ocho estaciones representativas del litoral rocoso de la isla. Se midió el diámetro de la base de la concha, se determinó el sexo y el tamaño mínimo de maduración. El 80 % de la población consistió de individuos pequeños < 25.5 mm. La proporción de sexos fue de 1:1, excepto en noviembre y el tamaño mínimo de inicio de la madurez para sexos combinados fue de 14.07 mm. Los parámetros de von Bertalanffy K (0.730 año-1), L∞ (110.78 mm) y Φ (3.95) son mayores respecto a otras poblaciones del Caribe. La mortalidad total fue de 3.39 año-1, la mortalidad natural y por pesca fue de 1.02 año-1 y 2.36 año-1, respectivamente. El máximo reclutamiento se estimó para junio y la tasa de explotación máxima entre 0.563 y 0.640, para tamaños de captura de 40 y 50 mm. La tasa de explotación se estimó en 0.70, lo que sugiere una fuerte presión sobre el recurso. Por lo anterior, se recomienda vedar por completo la captura manual de C. pica hasta que un monitoreo evidencie que la población se recupera en la isla.


Abstract Cittarium pica is a conspicuous gastropod of the rocky coastlines of the Caribbean. Given its importance in the diet of Caribbean communities, it has been over-exploited, even reaching extinction in some places, and the species has been included in the red lists of marine invertebrates in some countries. Its fishery in San Andres Island-Colombia is artisanal without any regulation, leading to a decrease in its population. Taking into account the socio-economic, cultural and ecological importance of C. pica and its vulnerability to extinction, it is urgent to develop management actions directed to increase the resilience of the species and its sustainability as a fishery resource. To assess the current population state of C. pica from San Andrés Island, we estimated size structure, sex structure, maturation size, and growth parameters, based on length-frequency data analysis. From September to December 2013, and January to March 2014, we randomly collected 458 individuals at eight representative sites of the rocky shores of the island. We measured the longest diameter of the shell base, determined the sex by the color of the gonad, and thus determined the minimum maturation size. We found, that 80 % of the population consisted of small individuals < 25.5 mm sizes. The sex ratio was 1:1 except in November, where males were more abundant. The minimum size at the beginning of maturity for both sexes was 14.07 mm. The growth parameters of von Bertalanffy: K (0.730 yr-1), L∞ (110.78 mm) and Φ (3.95) were higher when compared to other populations of the Caribbean. The total mortality was 3.39 yr-1, while natural and fishing mortalities were 1.02 yr-1 and 2.36 yr-1, respectively. The maximum annual recruitment pulse was estimated for June, and the maximum exploitation rate for a sustainable yield was between 0.563 and 0.640, when the catch size was greater than 40 mm or 50 mm, respectively. The exploitation rate was estimated in 0.70, suggesting a strong extractive resource pressure. With these results we recommend the closure of the fishery and constant monitoring to promote and the population recovery is verified. Until a monitoring shows that the population recovers on the island.

Agriculture is one of the bases of the Argentine economy. Glyphosate is undoubtedly one of the most important herbicides used. The increasing consumption and the efficiency of glyphosate-based herbicides have encouraged several studies on their persistence in soils, their effects on soil microbiota and their degradation processes. Fungi have been reported as being the main herbicide-degrading microorganisms as well as the most tolerant to environmental stress conditions. This study evaluated the growth performance of Aspergillus section Flavi and Aspergillus niger aggregate strains on Czapek Dox media supplied with a commercial glyphosate formulation as sole source of carbon (CZC), phosphorus (CZP) or nitrogen (CZN). Six Aspergillus spp. strains were evaluated. Each medium was stab-inoculated with fungal spores from 7-day old cultures. Two measures of colony radii were taken daily. All of the Aspergillus section Flavi strains showed a significant increase (from 24 to 44%) in growth rate on the CZN medium, as compared to controls. The A. niger aggregate strains exhibited the same behavioral pattern under all the conditions tested, except on the CZN medium. Velutinous or slightly floccose colonies with abundant sporulation were observed on CZP. Moreover, the colonies produced sparse sporulation on CZC or CZN media, being their appearances completely different from those on the CZP medium. This study establishes that A. section Flavi and A. niger aggregate strains can grow in vitro in the presence of glyphosate, especially when it is used as a sole source of phosphorus or nitrogen.


La agricultura es una de las bases de la economía argentina. El glifosato es, indudablemente, uno de los herbicidas más utilizados. El incremento en el consumo y la eficiencia de estos herbicidas han estimulado investigaciones sobre su persistencia en el suelo, sus efectos sobre la microbiota edáfica y su proceso de degradación. Los hongos son conocidos por su importancia como degradadores de herbicidas y por su tolerancia a condiciones de estrés ambiental. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el crecimiento de cepas de Aspergillus sección Flavi y del agregado Aspergillus niger en el medio Czapeck Dox suplementado con una solución comercial de glifosato como única fuente de carbono (CZC), de fósforo (CZP) o de nitrógeno (CZN). Seis cepas de Aspergillus fueron evaluadas. Cada medio fue inoculado con esporas fúngicas provenientes de cultivos de 7 días. Diariamente se tomaron 2 medidas del radio de las colonias. Todas las cepas de Aspergillus sección Flavi mostraron un incremento significativo (del 24 al 44%) en la velocidad de crecimiento en el medio CZN comparado con los controles. Las cepas del agregado A. niger mostraron el mismo comportamiento bajo todas las condiciones ensayadas, excepto en el medio CZN. Se observaron colonias velutinosas o ligeramente flocosas con abundante esporulación en los medios CZP. En los medios CZC o CZN, las colonias produjeron una esporulación escasa. Este estudio establece que cepas de Aspergillus sección Flavi y del agregado A. niger pueden desarrollar in vitro en presencia de glifosato, especialmente cuando es usado como única fuente de fósforo o nitrógeno.

ABSTRACT

Studies on age and growth of fish populations have direct application in fisheries and contribute for policies of conservation. Our aim was update information on the Micropogonias furnieri growth parameters based on sagittae otoliths annulis readings, and we expected that the studied population from Southeast Brazil can reach more longevity than the reported in the available literature. We examined 286 individuals between August-2010 and July-2011 from Ubatuba Bay, SP. The Total Length ranged 200-480 mm. The determined growth parameters were: Males, L∞ =523.4mm, k = 0.05×year-1, t0 = -8.78 year; Females L∞ = 573.5mm, k = 0.06 × year-1, t0 = -7.49 year. The MI and % of edge type evidenced the formation of one ring per year during autumn/winter, coinciding with low temperature and low growth rate. These results differed from those reported for the Vazzoler’s Population I (summer), and we detected higher longevity (45-48 years) as compared with the recorded in the available information.(AU)


Estudos de idade e crescimento de peixes têm aplicação direta na biologia pesqueira e contribuem para medidas de conservação. Nosso objetivo foi atualizar informações sobre parâmetros de crescimento de Micropogonias furnieri utilizando leitura de anéis etários em otólitos sagittae, esperando que a população do Sudeste do Brasil alcance maior longevidade do que o reportado na literatura. Examinamos 286 indivíduos, capturados entre agosto de 2010 e julho de 2011, na Baía de Ubatuba, SP. O comprimento total variou de 200-480 mm. Foram determinados os parâmetros de crescimento: Machos, L∞ = 523,4 mm, k = 0,05 ano-1, t0 = -8,78 ano; Fêmeas, L∞ = 573,5 mm, k = 0,06 ano-1, t0 = -7,49 ano. O IM e a porcentagem do tipo de borda evidenciaram o padrão de formação anual de anéis no outono/inverno, coincidindo com mais baixas temperaturas e crescimento lento. Estes resultados diferem dos reportados para População I de Vazzoler (verão), e nós detectamos longevidade bem superior (45-48 anos) à descrita anteriormente.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Physiologic growth parameters Wound healing Pereskia aculeata Mill., Cactaceae, is a cactus with high mucilage production, well-known for its nutritional properties. Folk use consists on skin injuries, and mucilage is probably involved in the wound healing activity. This work studied some aspects of its cultivation, specifically regarding soil (substrate), to correlate the effects of nutritional content to mucilage production and to the wound-healing property. Plants were grown under five different soil treatment (sand, crude soil, sand and soil, sand and cattle manure, soil and cattle manure), and after eight months extracts were prepared by turbo-extraction to obtain a crude hydroethanolic extract. We evaluated the effects of these extracts on swelling index, cytotoxicity, and in vitro wound healing property. The results show that the substrate used in cultivation may interfere with mucilage production, but not with cytotoxicity and wound healing, this shows the safety of its use, despite the soil treatment received along the various biomes where P. aculeata is cultivated. Furthermore, morphological studies demonstrated the beneficial effect of the mucilage-containing extract on the fibroblast cell culture, corroborating its folk use for wound healing.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the activities of some adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases) in the radicle of maize and cowpea grown in soils contaminated with crude oil and its fractions. Total ATPase, Ca2+ ATPase, Na+/K+ ATPase and Mg2+ ATPase activities were evaluated. Cowpea and maize seeds were planted in polythene bags containing 500g of sandy loam soil each. The soils used had no known history of crude oil contamination and the study was carried out in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Benin garden and laboratory. A total of 660 bags were used in the study. Of these, 60 bags were used for planting maize and cowpea (30 bags for each plant) in soils not contaminated, which served as controls for the plants and another 60 bags with soils from Ubeji (a crude oil contaminated site in, Delta State, Nigeria) was planted maize or cowpea (30 for each plant). The remaining 540 bags had soils that were contaminated with 2%, 5%, or 10% whole crude oil or its water soluble or water insoluble fraction, and in it were planted either maize or cowpea and they served as the test groups. The experiment lasted for a period of one month. Seedlings in 10 bags from each group of 30 bags were harvested after 7, 14, or 21 days post germination and the activities of ATPases were determined. The data obtained were subjected to descriptive statistic of variance analysis. In a general sense, contamination of soils with crude oil or its fractions or in Ubeji significantly increased (P<.01) the activities of total ATPase, Ca2+-, Mg2+-, and Na+/K+- ATPases of cowpea compared with the uncontaminated control. In maize the effect of crude oil was mixed however Mg2+- ATPases was consistently reduced with crude oil contamination. The study indicated that crude oil and its fraction affects the activities of adenosine triphosphatases in ways which are species related.

Se presentan las estimaciones de los parámetros de crecimiento del modelo de von Bertalanffy para el jurel Trachurus murphyi Nichols 1920 capturado en el mar peruano entre 1972 y 2012, a partir de análisis de frecuencias por tallas. La L∞ fue estimada a partir de la máxima talla observada a lo largo de la historia de su pesquería y se le mantuvo como parámetro fijo en la estimación del parámetro de crecimiento k a partir del ajuste directo de una curva de crecimiento sobre la progresión mensual de modas. Los valores estimados fueron: L∞ = 81.6 cm y k = 0.167 año-1. Se destaca que este valor de k es similar al estimado por otros autores y con otros métodos para el Perú, y es a su vez más alto que el estimado para el T. murphyi capturado frente a las costas de Chile. Estos resultados sugieren que el T. murphyi en el Perú tiene una velocidad de crecimiento más alta que el T. murphyi de Chile


This paper presents estimates of the von Bertalanffy growth parameters for Jack mackerel T. murphyi caught in Peruvian waters from 1972 to 2012, based on length frequency analysis. L∞ was estimated from the maximum length observed throughout the history of the fishery, and was kept as a fixed parameter in the estimation of k obtained by fitting a growth curve to the monthly progression of modes. The estimated values were: L∞ = 81.6 cm and k = 0.167y-1. It is highlighted that this k values is similar to those estimated by other authors for Peru, and is higher than those estimated for the T. murphyi caught off in Chile. These results suggest that T. murphyi caught in Peru has a faster growth rate than the T. murphyi from Chile

Background: Growth parameters at birth are important for clinical decision-making. In Sri Lanka, the data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Multicentre Growth Reference Study (MGRS) are used to interpret these measurements. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between September and October 2010 in hospitals of Gampaha district, Sri Lanka. The weight, length and head circumference of all normal-term babies born in the Gampaha district during this period were measured within 8 h of birth using standard techniques. Measurements were taken by medical graduates trained and supervised by a consultant paediatrician. Socio-demographic data were obtained using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Results: Of the 2215 babies recruited, 1127 were males. The mean birth weight, mean length and mean head circumference at birth were 2.92 kg, 49.1 and 33.6 cm, respectively. Boys weighed and measured more than girls in all parameters, but the differences were not statistically significant. Growth parameters of babies included in this study deviated from that in the MGRS data. Mean values of MGRS data were between 75th and 90th centiles of this study population. Birth order, family income and maternal education were significantly (P < 0.01) associated with growth parameters. Contrary to common belief, growth parameters continued to increase progressively up to 41 weeks. Maternal age less than 20 years or more than 35 years was negatively associated with birth weight (P < 0.01). Conclusions: Growth parameters of new-born babies deviated significantly from the values of the MGRS data. Growth characteristics of one population may not be applicable to another population due to variations in maternal, genetic and socio-economic factors. Using growth charts not applicable to a population will result in wrong interpretations.

ABSTRACT

The growth, yield, and carbon content of eight-month old seedlings of Pongamia pinnata were compared under water and urea supplementation. One set of plants were subjected to water stress condition (WS), whereas the other supplied with 2 g of urea (WS+U) under WS. Both the experimental set ups were exposed to varying treatment levels which include full irrigation (100%, control) followed by 75 % (T1), 50 % (T2), 25 % (T3) and 12.5 % (T4). The growth, leaf area and relative water content were maximum under WS when compared to WS+U (p<0.001). The maximum biomass was produced in the seedlings under WS in control (1.68 g) followed by T1 (1.38 g), T2 (1.53 g), T3 (0.93 g) and T4 (0.73 g). A significant (p<0.001) reduction in biomass production was observed in WS+U in control (1.28 g), T1 (0.66 g), T2 (1.13 g) and T3 (0.44 g). T4 of WS+U showed similar biomass (0.73 g) as that of T4 of WS. Under WS, the highest biomass allocation was recorded in shoots followed by leaves and roots. Similar trend was observed in WS+U. However, the percentage of allocation was more in the roots of WS+U (27.2 %) when compared to WS (22.24 %). The highest amount of carbon content was observed in control plants treated under WS (9.59 g) followed by control plants of WS+U (7.31 g) (p<0.001). The results of the preliminary study clearly indicated that P. pinnata seedlings were able to cope-up with water stress conditions without urea application and can perform well in 50 % water availability and is best suited for the plantation programs in the semi-arid ecosystems.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the current study was to supply the first information on age and growth for Thunnus obesus caught in the equatorial south-western Atlantic using dorsal spines, an approach that has been successfully employed for ageing tuna species. The study was conducted using a multi-model inference based on information theory for back-calculated and observed length-at-age data. Uncertainty associated with the parameter estimation was verified and results were compared to other accounts on the species, considering both the statistical and methodological contexts. Samples were collected in Natal city (Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil) from February 1999 to January 2000, of tuna vessels and from surveys, aimed at providing information on the Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the area around São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago. Validation using marginal increment indicated that one ring is deposited per year. Mean length-at-age ranged of 54.3 to 177.5 cm (fork length) for ages 1 to 9 years. Von Bertalanffy, Richards, and Gompertz models were considered suitable for the bigeye tuna. Hence, the model-averaged asymptotic length ¯L∞ was estimated. The averaged model generated in the present study by back-calculation was considered appropriate for describing the growth of T. obesus.


A proposta do presente estudo foi fornecer a primeira informação sobre idade e crescimento de Thunnus obesus, capturado no Atlântico sudoeste equatorial usando espinhos dorsais, uma abordagem que tem sido utilizada com sucesso na determinação de idade de espécies de atuns. O estudo foi conduzido usando uma inferência de multi-modelos baseada na teoria de informação avaliada para dados de comprimento por idade retrocalculados e observados. Incertezas associadas aos parâmetros foram verificadas e os resultados foram comparados aos de outros estudos realizados para esta espécie, considerando os contextos estatísticos e metodológicos. As amostras foram coletadas na cidade de Natal (estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil) de fevereiro de 1999 a janeiro de 2000, provenientes de embarcações comerciais e também prospecções, cujo objetivo foi prover informações sobre a Zona Econômica Exclusiva (ZEE) na área do entorno do Arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo. A validação usando incremento marginal indicou a deposição de um anel anual. Os comprimentos médios por idade variaram entre 54.3 a 175.7 cm (comprimento furcal) para idades de 1 a 9 anos. Os modelos Von Bertalanffy, Richards e Gompertz foram considerados adequados para a albacora bandolim e, desta forma, o comprimento assintótico para um modelo médio (¯L∞) foi estimado. O modelo médio gerado no presente estudo a partir dos comprimentos retrocalculados foi considerado apropriado para descrever o crescimento de T. obesus capturada no Atlântico.

ABSTRACT

A utilização de funções matemáticas para descrever o crescimento animal é antiga. Elas permitem resumir informações em alguns pontos estratégicos do desenvolvimento ponderal e descrever a evolução do peso em função da idade do animal. Também é possível comparar taxas de crescimento de diferentes indivíduos em estados fisiológicos equivalentes. Os modelos de curvas de crescimento mais utilizados na avicultura são os derivados da função Richards, pois apresentam parâmetros que possibilitam interpretação biológica e portanto podem fornecer subsídios para seleção de uma determinada forma da curva de crescimento em aves. Também pode-se utilizar polinômios segmentados para descrever as mudanças de tendência da curva de crescimento animal. Entretanto, existem importantes fatores de variação para os parâmetros das curvas, como a espécie, o sistema de criação, o sexo e suas interações. A adequação dos modelos pode ser verificada pelos valores do coeficiente de determinação (R2), do quadrado médio do resíduo (QM res), do erro de predição médio (EPm), da facilidade de convergência dos dados e pela possibilidade de interpretação biológica dos parâmetros. Estudos envolvendo modelagem e descrição da curva de crescimento e seus componentes são amplamente discutidos na literatura. Porém, programas de seleção que visem a progressos genéticos para a forma da curva não são mencionados. A importância da avaliação dos parâmetros dos modelos de curvas de crescimento é ainda mais relevante já que os maiores ganhos genéticos para peso estão relacionados com seleção para pesos em idades próximas ao ponto de inflexão. A seleção para precocidade pode ser auxiliada com base nos parâmetros do modelo associados à variáveis que descrevem esta característica genética dos animais. Esses parâmetros estão relacionados a importantes características produtivas e reprodutivas e apresentam magnitudes diferentes, de acordo com a espécie, o sexo e o modelo utilizados na avaliação. ...


The use of mathematical models to describe animal growth is not recent. They are able to summarize information on strategic dots of animal growth development and to describe the evolution of weight according to the animal age. It is also possible to compare different individuals in similar physiologic stages. The growth models most commonly used in poultry breeding are derived from Richards function, and they present parameters that provide biological interpretation and knowledge to select a specific shape of growth curve in poultry. However, it is also possible to use segmented polynomials to describe trend changes during the animal growth. One needs to consider important variables affecting the growth curve parameters estimates, such as, production system, specie, sex and their interactions. Model Goodness-of-fit can be based on many criteria such as coefficient of determination (R2), residual mean squared error, (LSe), estimated predicted mean error (PME), the easiness the analysis to reach convergence and the possibility of biological interpretation of parameters. Studies involving modeling and description of growth curve and their components are described in literature, but, there is no selection programs applied to the growth curve shape. The importance of determinating the parameters of growth curve models is more relevant when considering that most of the genetic gains for growth traits are related to selection, on weights near to the inflexion point. Often, selection to fast growth is important in all breeding programs, and could be based on genetic parameters of the growth curve parameters. These parameters are related to important productive and reproductive traits, and present different values, according to specie, sex and models used in evaluation. Growht and mortality of the mollusk Pteria sterna in wild banks of Southern Baja California, Mexico. The Gulf of California nacre shell Pteria sterna is an important marine resource in Mexico, and the main species for "half" and round pearl production in the American continent. Wild spat can only be extracted legally for research or culture activities. This study calculates growth and mortality parameters for wild stocks in the eastern coast of Southern Baja California. Height’s data (353 dorso-ventral measurements) were taken from 1997 to 1999 at Santa Rosalía, Mulegé and Loreto Bay coast. The maximum length was estimated at 130.35 mm (124.22-136.48 mm, p>0.95). The length frequency data were set in a "virtual year". Seasonal von Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated in the ELEFAN I routine, the values are: L∞ = 156.02 mm, k = 0.48 year-1, t0 = -0.216 years, C = 0.43, WP = 0.73. and t s = 0.5. The growth performance index was Φ’ = 4.068. The total mortality was calculated from length-converted catch curve Z = 3.34 year-1. The length-weight relationship was fixed for the equation W = 0.000756 * L(i)2.7075 (r²= 0.90, n = 233). The growth parameters values in experimental repopulation conditions are quite different, in contrast with the growth estimated in wild stocks oysters. The value of total mortality is similar to the estimations for Pinctada fucata populations from the Red Sea and P. radiata from the Mediterranean Sea. Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (3): 659-670. La concha nácar Pteria sterna sustenta los perlicultivos en México, y es la base de producción de perlas en el continente Americano. Está bajo protección especial desde 1994, y solo puede capturarse semilla natural para cultivo e investigación. Determinamos su crecimiento y mortalidad en bancos silvestres, registrando la altura de ostras de Santa Rosalía, Mulegé y Bahía de Loreto (1997-99). La longitud máxima estimada fue 130.35 mm (124.22-136.48 mm, P>0.95). Las frecuencias de longitudes se ordenaron en un "año virtual" (Guanco 1991). Los parámetros de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy estimados con el programa ELEFAN I fueron: L∞= 156.02 mm, k=0.48año-1, t0=-0.216 años, C= 0.43 y WP = 0.73; el índice de desempeño de crecimiento fue Φ’ = 4.068. La mortalidad total fue de Z = 3.34 año -1por longitud convertida a curva de captura. La regresión del peso total y la altura tuvo la expresión W = 0.000756 * L(i)2.7075 (r²=0.90, n=233). Mostramos la diferencia entre los parámetros de crecimiento en condiciones de repoblamiento experimental y aquellos de individuos silvestres de P. sterna. El valor de mortalidad total es comparable a aquellos de Pinctada fucata en el mar Rojo o P. radiata en el mar Mediterráneo.
